Acadia National Park surrounds Bar Harbor and is just minutes from the inn.The Friar is one of the village's original B&B's. Rooms are gracious and comfortable, and the building has a British inn flavor inside and out. Now under new ownership, the innkeeeper Tom Hulbert (formerly of The Holland Inn) greets guests each morning in the inn's full-service dining room with breakfasts made from recipes certain to delight. Along with good food, the spirit is always festive in Friar's dining room with stories, local humor, and good advice for what to do in Acadia from all of the Friars on the staff. Each afternoon the Friar's Pub opens at 4pm. The inn's pub is unique for small B&B's here in the village. Come back from a busy day in the park and relax with refreshments and good company in the traditional British pub. A full line of spirits, wines and Gritty McDuff's microbrews (Maine's best) are served in the Renaissance pub. Dinner service begins at 5pm. The Black Friar holds the distinction of being the smallest lodging establishment in Bar Harbor with full-service kitchen and pub. The inn is a gentleman's retreat, and the ladies will be delighted with the attention to detail. All of the woodwork, along with the mysterious Gothic atmosphere, makes the Friar an exciting and memorable place to stay. With the pub, the living room and the old Friar's Pub, the inn offers guests spacious and comfortable common areas with two fireplaces. These two rooms are full of fine woodwork from the past, complemented with lots of reading material about the island and Downeast region. Other common areas include the roof deck and the mysterious Grotto Tavern.Black Friars were monks of the Franciscan Order. They were sent out into the masses to spread their knowledge and beliefs. Many Friars frequented taverns and lodging establishments to interact with the people, and characters like "Friar Tuck" became famous for their joyful message and love of fine food, mead and brew. The Black Friar monk was revered in the Dark Ages as a soul that would inspire joyful conversation and happiness in the locals enjoying his presence. Today at the Black Friar Inn, we value the traditions of the past, and all of our Friars extend a warm and hospitable welcome to the "Old Weary Traveler" at our Inn and Tavern.
